B2B normally stands for Business to Business, but I want to talk about getting Back to Basics.

The world in general and the business world in particular, is becoming more and more complicated. Technology, while often of great benefit, can add to the complexity and the increase in the number of laws, banking regulations and the labour legislation add to the difficulty of running a business today.

It is important to keep up to date with all of these, but in the day to day rush it is too easy to lose sight of what your business is really all about.

There is an old saying – “You can’t see the woods for the trees”. Can you see your business clearly amongst all the “noise”?

This is when I recommend that you give your business a “full medical”. Go back to the basics of the business and check that they are still working properly. It is essential to have a good Vision ans mission. The next step is to go through all the other aspects of the business.

 

Products – are these all profitable and fit in with your mission?

Markets – are you focusing on your core markets or have you got sidetracked in other less profitable ones, at the expense of your core markets?

Systems – are your systems still running properly to ensure an efficient business and good customer service?

Cash Flow – have you got full control of your cash flow?

Employees – do you have the right employees and are they engaged with the company?

Quality – are you still delivering the quality of product or service that you want to and how can you improve it?

I may not have covered all the areas that are relevant to your business but the essence of what I am saying is to take a good look at the basics that you need to get right, in order to be successful.

You can’t get fit if you have some underlying problems with your health and your business is no different.
